Senior Annie Cimack was one of the select juniors who had the opportunity to participate in the French exchange program last year. Now as an AP French student, Cimack had the opportunity of repeating the exchange program, but this time with German students.
The German exchange program, initiated by social science teachers Jonathan Kaminsky and Dave Schnell, had its premiere this year. The German students, who left Friday during fifth period, are now on their way home to Berlin, where their Prospect partners will travel to during spring break in March.
“It’s a great opportunity to have friends in another country,” Cimack said.
Before leaving, the German students and their partners had a busy week. Students from Berlin attended tours and programs in downtown Chicago during the weekdays, meeting back up with Prospect students after school. On Oct. 13, all involved in the exchanged attended a cultural activity at the Turkish American Society cultural center, trying the art of water marbling, making Turkish cuisine, and getting Turkish henna. Later, groups went to have dinner with Turkish families in the area.
Prospect students will complete a research based assignment based on their cultural experience with the U.S. and later in Berlin. The details of the assignment will be determined by Schnell and Kaminsky for second semester.
15-year-old Amelie Nguyen headed back to Berlin yesterday. Her biggest surprise was how big Chicago is compared to Berlin. Although she has traveled around Europe before, this was her first time participating in an exchange.
“The people are so nice, so much,” Nguyen said.
