The Field House floor was covered in chalk following the Gymnastics’ Conference Meet held Friday Jan. 27. Prospect hosted 12 teams, that competed for the East and West Division Title.
Prospect girls’ gymnastics scored a team total of 143.475 and took 2nd place to Fremd who had a 146.400.
“We just wanted to come out and hit,” Senior Lauren Johnson said. “We finished strong.”
Sophomore Gianna Scala placed 1st for both her floor exercise and the vault, taking out of 10, a 9.775 and 9.450 respectively. After having a fall during her bars routine, Scala knew her floor routine had to be her best and she had to go all out.
As Scala was the last to compete for floor, she watched everyone complete what she believes was one of the team’s best performances. She just wanted to keep the positive energy and help the team out by finishing strong. Scala did in fact finish strong by breaking the school record a 9.65 for floor that she had set last season.
Johnson placed 2nd with 36.425 in All-Around after practicing hard all week and running through her routines over and over again. She felt the practices paid off, making the competition seem less stressful.
Next the team continues to work their way to the State meet traveling to Conant for the Regional competition. Girls’ Gymnastics has never made it to State as a team and that is one of the teams main goals.
“Regionals, Wednesday, we are going to try to be even stronger and Sectionals [are] the following Tuesday [where] we are going to try to be our strongest,” Randy Smith, the Girls’ Gymnastics head coach said.
