On Saturday, the boys’ cross country team had what senior Chris Spudic described as “one of [their] worst meets of the year.”  Strangely enough, such a performance was still good enough for a second place finish at sectionals (behind Palatine) and a ticket to the state meet next week.

Spudic, who finished eighth with a time of 16:08 and received all-sectional honors, is, surprisingly, glad that his team didn’t run well today.

“We got our bad race out of the way, so we can’t do any worse,” Spudic said.  “We’re going [into the state meet] with that attitude of, ‘We can only do good now.'”

The Knighthood of Runners look to do “a lot better,” according to Spudic, than their sixth place finish last year at the state meet this Saturday in Peoria.

The team is also better equipped than most for bad weather, according to Spudic, which could be a big factor, seeing as the weather in Illinois hasn’t been great lately.

“Unlike other schools, our running program lifts, so we have more core strength,” Spudic said.  “It’s easier to run through adverse conditions [that way].”

Check back later this week for a full preview of the state meet for both boys’ and girls’ cross country!
