Peer tutor applications open for next year
May 14, 2022
Junior Sara Maggio remembers having an early morning wrapping party with her and other members of Knights Inspired to Teach (KITT). The party was intended to wrap crayons for the Cradles for Crayons Drive earlier this year.
“My favorite part is feeling like I’m making a difference at Prospect and that hopefully once I graduate I have left a positive impact,” Maggio said.
Cradles for Crayons is just one event that KITT sponsors. More importantly, they also provide peer tutoring to students of all grade levels. Peer tutoring is a less intimidating, student-run service that gives anyone extra help in a variety of classes.
Associate Principal for Instruction Joyce Kim, who oversees peer tutoring, looks for applicants who are helpful, patient, kind and empathetic. She believes that students can teach concepts in a way that is easier to understand.
Kim notices character growth with both the tutor and the student. The tutors are able to expand their knowledge by teaching someone else, and the students are able to advocate for themselves by asking for help.
“My heart warms when I see the tutoring sessions … to see students helping other students,” Kim said.
Peer tutor applications for the 2022-23 school year are open to all rising sophomores, juniors and seniors. A link is posted to your class Schoology page with a form to fill out. Applications are due May 15 at 5 p.m.
