On a cold, winter day at Harper College, the Prospect Speech Team took home first place in the MSL conference competition for the 3rd year in a row. They won by a margin of 43 points to the next closest opposition.

Although the team is used to topping the event, senior Wiktoria Tofilska, who has been a part of all the last three conference successes, believes that winning the MSL was still an uplifting boost for the squad.

“Winning the MSL was great because it helped us remember that if we really work hard, we can achieve what we want, and it was really a good way to start off the state series,” said Tofilska.

Now the team is looking forward to the state series Regional event at Glenbrook North. Tofilska has confidence that they are prepared for the big competitions ahead.

“We are all working hard, staying after school, making sure we are running our pieces, making sure we are practicing our speeches. We are also showing them to a lot of different people. We don’t hesitate to work with each other to get more feedback,” Tofliska said.

8th year head coach Michael Piccoli also has trust in his squad for the end of the season. He feels that the chemistry after winning the MSL is at a high level.

“I think that they’re excited. I think that they’re ready to go have fun at the state series. And I think that they’ll do good things.” Piccoli said.

The next weekend after MSL conference, the speech team went on to win IHSA Regionals as well.
