Come May 21, the theater department will present the student body with a performance that is unlike any other to grace Prospect’s stage this year.
“R and J,” a spin on Shakespeare’s classic “Romeo and Juliet” runs in the Community Room at the beginning of periods one through eight.
Jeremy Morton and a small collection of Prospect’s actors and actresses have been putting on this laid-back production every spring since 2003.
Morton describes the show as laid back because of the student-driven aspect of it.
Each student involved serves a much larger purpose than just an actor; they take on the responsibility of writing each scene.
The production strays from Shakepeare’s original script while keeping the original plot line, but only in the name of creativity.
“The cast has basically taken the script and re-written it,” senior Katie Haskins said.
Along with fellow senior Anna Filipic and freshman Lauren Kinser, Haskins serves as a student director. They contribute in many ways, such as adding to the never ending creative process which is conducive to making each scene as funny and well thought out as possible.
As a first-year student director, Filipic has seen three different variations of this production and says that the audience should expect a relaxed environment and “non-stop laughing. It’s very funny and it never gets old.”
