The showdown between the champion, Leon “Rocky” Edwards, and the challenger, Colby “Chaos” Covington, was highly anticipated in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) community, yet it didn’t live up to the hype. The bout lacked the expected excitement, resulting in a passive, slow fight.
Senior, Logan Provost, pitched in with his friends to buy the UFC card but wasn’t fulfilled.
One of the reasons for the passiveness both fighters showed was the cautious approach they had. Their strategies prioritized preventing injuries rather than inflicting injuries.
“I wanted to see more striking, both fighters weren’t bloody or anything,” said Provost.
Throughout the contest, both fighters never fully committed to exchanging blows, resulting in both fighters circling and striking from a distance. It’s strategic and effective in securing a win by decision, but it often comes at the expense of entertainment, unlike knockouts or submissions.
The lack of big moments and shifts in momentum added to the fight’s lack of excitement. The fighters seemed happy to maintain distance and control rather than attempt to finish the fight decisively.
During the interviews, the fighters let their words flow freely. Covington even said that he would put Edwards in a grave, alongside his father, who passed away. The interviews were very intense, maybe more than the actual fight, which is why most viewers were disappointed.
Covington playing such a passive fight confused many people who bought the card. This fight could’ve very well have been Covington’s last shot at a UFC belt and he wasted it running around the octagon the entire time.
“I think that’s the most underwhelming fight I’ve seen this whole year,” said Provost.
