Q: When and how did you start getting into doing art?
A: My older sister is an artist and she’s in college right now for art. We shared a room, she would be drawing and I was like ‘I guess I should try too’. We did it together because we did most things together.
Q: What art classes have you taken at Prospect?
A: I took art one the first year, then as a sophomore I took 2D art and this year I’m taking portfolio and I’m taking graphic design.
Q: What is your favorite medium to work with?
A: Most of the time I use a bunch [of different types] because I normally can’t decide… because I like a lot of materials.
Q: What inspires your art?
A: Normally it’s just like whatever my brain comes up with, a lot of stuff around me. My parents are big on concerts so there’s a lot of posters in my basement… I feel like that inspires me a good amount.
Q: What’s the story behind the piece that won the award?
A: Ms. Christoffersen our teacher… she was basically like ‘okay make a collage piece’. I knew I wanted to do a person this time because I hadn’t drawn any people yet in that class… I wanted it to be very stylized, very geometric. I don’t like being specific with it because that’s part of the fun. Thinking about, oh, what’s really going on [in the art piece]?
Q: What does your art mean to you?
A: It’s kind of nice looking back at your old stuff to see, what can you gain from yourself?… there’s definitely aspects that I would have done differently now, that’s always a part of the fun though. It’s kind of a time capsule in its own way.
Q: How does it feel to get this award?
A: Obviously it felt really cool. It’s really cool to be acknowledged, have people like your stuff [work] and have [other] people be happy because of what you love to do.
