When looking at the title of this book, the first thing that comes to mind is, “not another werewolf romance!” It’s like every fiction author out there has to try their hand at writing about high school kids who on top of friends, homework, and puberty, have to deal with turning into a furry monster.
Although werewolves are the main theme in Jennifer Lynn Barnes’ Raised by Wolves, she ventures off the beaten path by making the protagonist human. She also adds dynamic and insight into pack life and culture. Bryn, the main character, is traumatized as a child when she watches a rogue werewolf murder her parents. Lucky for her the alpha of a powerful pack rescues her and takes her back to his pack. She grows up as one of the only humans in a pack of werewolves.
When Bryn discovers a caged werewolf, Chase, in the Alpha’s basement questions start to surface and the only one who can answer them is the stranger locked away. Bryn embarks on a journey to discover the truth of her past and the strange connection she feels to Chase. The only part of this book that annoyed me is that some parts were so obvious, but Bryn was blissfully unaware.
The best part about the novel is that it doesn’t end with Raised by Wolves. Bryn’s story continues in the second installment Trial by Fire.
