Welcome back, Knights! I’m sure many were disappointed of the deprivation of posts from the Prospector, but don’t worry, we’re back!
Summer 2012 had it’s ups and it’s downs. The weather was agreeably always up, while the closing of the Arlington Theatre was a downfall for many. High schoolers all around Arlington Heights and Mount Prospect lost a fun hang out spot, but some also lost a job. So to get over all of our losses, what do we turn to? The music that defined those late, hot summer nights.
This summer was especially different because once you get into high school, you meet so many friends that have cars! You don’t always have to beg your mom or dad for a ride, but instead you just say, “I’ll be back before curfew!” OK. . . maybe not BEFORE curfew, how about a few hours after?
The song “Happening” was always blasting in my friend’s cars on the way to the beach, when we headed downtown chicago, to get something to eat and even to Wisconsin. It defined Summer 2012.
“Welcome to the life, maybe I’m good at living” is the first line in the song, and forces you to feel exactly what it says.
The chorus is a repetitive three lines. “It’s your choice, what are you waiting for? Cause this is happening, yeah this is happening.”
Besides the obvious fact that this is a feel-good song, Chiddy Bang might be one of the most underrated rap groups out there. They put an alternative twist to the regular hip hop sound into their music.
The main rapper in the group, Chidera (Chiddy) Anamege broke the Guiness World Record for Longest Freestyle Rap and Longest Marathon Rapping Record in 2009 by rapping straight for 9 hours, 18 minutes and 22 seconds.
Chiddy’s sidekick, Noah “Xaphoon Jones” Beresin, is the one that makes the duo as unique as it is. His production and crisp beats to go along with Chiddy’s raps is what sets them apart from most of the other rap groups out there.
In an interview, Beresin was asked what inspired him produce this unique sound.
“ It was really just, you know, seeing how we could get the most people going crazy at one time,” was his response.
Many of us Knights still have a strong case of the summer fever. So on this Friday night instead of worrying about any homework you might have (yes freshman, get used to it), play the song and have a final taste of Summer 2012.
