Walking into First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre in Tinley Park last Friday, I felt more out of place than fish out of water. The majority of the people were dressed in black band shirts, weird hairstyles, accompanied by facial piercings and tattoos. I’ve been to rock concerts before, Scorpions and Bon Jovi, but this Kiss and Motley Crue concert was a whole different world. Trying not to leave my dads side, because to be honest I was a little scared for my well being, we found our seats.
Motley Crue performed first, with laser lights, fog, back-up dancers and props. Most impressive wasn’t how they managed to swear every few seconds, but the way the drummer, Tommy Lee, was able to play his drum set upside down. It’s hard to explain, and easier to see for yourself. The atmosphere was great and the attendees ranged from old school rockers to little kids throwing holding up the universal rock sign with their little hands.
Their show was impressive and hard to follow, but Kiss managed to give an equal, if not better performance. Complete with black and white make-up, heels which I don’t think I could have managed five minutes in, and original outfits, Kiss blew me away. They didn’t use extra back up dancers or multiple lasers, but instead stuck to old fashioned, good quality, music. One Kiss member flew through the crowd to sing on a raised podium, again, see for yourself.
One of the most important things I learned that night was that you don’t have to be a ballerina to stand on your toes for a long period of time. Even if you’re on the shorter side and attending a concert, on the bright side, you’ll get a great workout.
