Though marked by occasional thrillers, like the memorable double-overtime 50-46 win over Stevenson, and the more recent double-overtime win against Hononegah, the girls’ basketball team’s success this season has come largely through an unspectacular but highly successful blend of unyielding defense and efficient, distributed scoring.
Tuesday night’s game against the Barrington Fillies (8-8 overall) was a perfect example. A concerted defensive effort – led by senior Lexi Glennon – helped limit Barrington’s Abby Kirchoff, an all-conference player, to just two points. Meanwhile, the Knights (13-4 overall) spread the ball around offensively, with junior Sarah Winans scoring a team-high 10 points, senior Rachel Hunt close behind with nine, and junior Sarah Hunt and Glennon adding eight more each.
As usual, the team did a “really good job of coming out strong,” Rachel said, assuring that the final result – a 35-28 Prospect win – was never in serious jeopardy.
The win marked another success for the Lady Knights, who placed fourth at their winter tournament, the Dundee-Crown Charger Classic. The finish was the team’s highest in the event since 2001.
Now, though, the team turns its focus to conference play; it has a reasonable chance of taking the East, but the Knights must make up for a loss, 32-34, to Elk Grove earlier in the season. First come games against Wheeling and Hersey, on the ninth and 15th, and then if all goes well, a chance at redemption against the Grenadiers on the 22nd.
“We can hold our own,” Rachel said.
