Peter King will be taking over for Coach Michael Reidy, who has been the head coach for the last 30 years and has established a strong foundation and culture within the program.
“Coach Reidy has really built a legacy that will last,” King said. “I think in my first year as varsity head coach I would definitely like to keep a lot that he built to maintain the program, I definitely need to put my stamp on things, so my goal is to change a few things and to continue to build up the culture of the program and hopefully take it to an even higher level of play.”
Looking ahead to next year, King is confident that the leadership of returning upperclassmen will be important to the development of new players.
King believes that “something that will be beneficial will be having upperclassmen have more say during training in season and before the season and over the summer when it comes to the development of underclassmen or new players.”
He also plans to implement new strategies to elevate the program, such as increasing the use of video montages during practices and enhancing pre-season camps to sharpen skills.
Some other changes that King will be implementing in terms of practice will be more video / film montages for players to be able to improve as well as improving the camps pre season to improve upon their skills.
Coming from his time as the JV coach, King wants to see communication from both coaches and players from all levels of the program.
“I think it is important that every coach in a program has a voice,” King said. “I think it’s important that every player in a program has a voice. Having been in the underlevels in the last 19 years, Reidy has done a great job letting me express myself as the jv coach and I plan on continuing that.”
As he prepares for his first season leading the varsity squad, King already has goals in mind.
“I’m going to continue to build a culture, to make sure that returning players and new players feel welcomed, goal 2 would be to keep a high level of play during practice and match play making sure we are very competitive in nature and then lastly making sure it is a welcoming environment for everyone.”
King also sees the challenge that comes with transitioning from JV to Varsity head coach.
“I think the players know me as the JV coach and I’ll definitely need to establish myself as the varsity coach because it is definitely a different mindset, on my part as well as the players to see me in a different light which will be a challenge for everyone, I think we are willing to make those changes and grow.”
