The Knights hosted their rival, Rolling Meadows, for a big MSL East game on Friday night in the Jean Walker Field House. It was close for most of the first quarter, but then with 1:53 left, the Knights went on a 9-2 run which put them up 17-9 at the end of the quarter. Prospect was in control for most of the game and got the lead all the way up to 13 in the third quarter when they led 39-26.
The Knights led the whole game up until the 2:04 mark in the fourth quarter, when Rolling Meadows tied up the game on two free throws. The Knights didn’t panic and played well down the stretch due to some good free throw shooting and a huge defensive play by sophomore Mike LaTulip with a 4 seconds remaining.
“We did everything that needed to be done down the stretch,” said coach John Camardella. “They kept their composure and made big plays.”
Prospect pulled out the close game and won, 62-58.
LaTulip was the leading scorer for the Knights with 15 points, all of which came in the second half. Senior Sam Pope had 14; senior Jack Redding had 13; and seniors Nsenzi Salasini and Kevin Matkovic both had 8.
Rolling Meadows was really keyed in on LaTulip and they held him scoreless in the first half.
“On every possession, they called out where I was on the court,” said LaTulip, “I was being double and triple teamed and couldn’t get open. In the second half I was able to play my game. My teammates set good screens and I was able to get open and I had some good looks.”
Matkovic said that there were a lot of things the Knights did well.
“We really pushed the ball up in transition that led to some easy points,” he said. “We worked the ball well and got people open looks and we capitalized.”
“I thought that we attacked very well tonight.” said Camardella. “We got to the basket a lot and that created scoring opportunities for us.”
“This is a huge win,” Matkovic added. “We are now 7-0 in the East and we just beat one of the better teams in the East. It’s a big confidence builder for us.”
