Educators rising is a fairly new club at Prospect, active for only 3 years. The club offers students interested in becoming teachers learn more about the field.
Recently, on April 12th, the educators rising club placed 2nd in their district competition held at National Louis University in Wheeling.
Four members were chosen to compete from the Prospect club: seniors Amanda Behles, Michael Guenard, Elle Weber, and junior Ashley Erikson.
The four of them were assembled merely a month before the initial competition and were tasked with building a lesson plan on a subject they wouldn’t know until the competition.
“You’re not even told the grade you’re teaching,” said club sponsor Amy Collins, “we had a box of materials to use and the rest was just preparation.”
Preparation is key in these competitions as the methods teachers use are constantly changing as newer technology is introduced.
“It’s an ever evolving field and our team really adapted and did great with what we had,” Collins said.
The actual presentation reflected that, as the heat of the moment nature made it clear to the team that they had to think fast and on their feet.
“It was kind of nerve wracking hearing that,” Erikson said, “but I think we did awesome for how little we practiced for it.”
Next year Ashley Erikson will be the team captain for the 2020 competition, and hopes her team’s performance shows who they really are as teachers.
“I think this will show we will all be great future teachers,” Erikson said.
