Immersive experience for the production of 'Mamma Mia'

Mamma Mia, although seen sometimes as a cheesy musical, is a fan favorite for most. Set on the make-believe Greek island Kalokairi, Mamma Mia is about a mother, Donna, and daughter, Sophie, preparing for Sophie’s wedding of the year, while dealing with the complications of the fun and famous plot: Who is my father?

The movie, although serious at some times, like during the tear-jerking scene featuring ABBA’s “Slipping Through My Fingers,” is fun-filled and energetic, causing watchers to want to get up and dance to the music.

With the well-known soundtrack, including songs like “Dancing Queen,” “Mamma Mia,” and “Lay All Your Love on Me,” people can easily identify what movie the music is coming from.

Prospect’s fine arts program has been working hard over the past couple of months to produce this fun and comforting story for the community.

Prospect’s show, which will be performed April 17 through April 20, takes place at the White Eagle Events and Convention Center in Niles. Tickets are $25 each, including a seat for the show and light desserts and appetizers.

“This performance is definitely different from ones in the past,” freshman ensemble member Julia Hong said. “The audience should expect to interact with the actors quite a bit.”

Audience members will be sitting at designated tables in a way that resembles a wedding. The cast of Mamma Mia has been trying to portray a real wedding as best they can.

“It’s almost like you’re breaking the fourth wall,” freshman wedding guest Erin Elliot said. “I know the show is just going to be very fun and immersive.”

Elliot described a scene where she dances with the guests and even teaches them a couple of dance moves so that they feel included. Her favorite number to perform is “Dancing Queen,” the famous ABBA song.

During the show, there will be a good balance between interacting and watching the performance.

“We’ve been working really hard and I know the whole cast is so excited for opening day,” Hong said.
