Grammy’s Fashion: Fit or Flop?

The 67th annual Grammy Awards took place in Los Angeles on February 2nd, and tons of celebrities wore their Sunday best. From Kendrick Lamar in a Canadian tuxedo, to Gracie Abrams in a wedding dress, the guests did not disappoint. And, the outfits were perfectly made to represent the artists wearing them.

Taylor Swift stunned in a custom red dress by Vivienne Westwood. This look is different from what she’s been wearing recently, but it’s a welcome surprise. Taylor has been leaning towards more neutral colors when she’s been spotted out and about the past few months, so fans expected her to be wearing something more monotone. But,the element of shock is what makes this outfit so good. The bejeweled dress sparkles in the flashes of the camera, making Swift stand out. The off the shoulder top paired with the slit gives it a cool asymmetrical appearance. And, the chain on her thigh features a “T” charm, leading fans to wonder if it stands for Swift’s own name, her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, or something else entirely. Overall, this look is a welcome change for Swift, and I hope to see more of it in the future.

Beyonce may have opted not to walk the red carpet, but she still served a phenomenal look. She wore a custom Schiaparelli dress that looks very western, perfect to match the theme of her now Grammy award winning album, “Cowboy Carter”. The pattern of the dress is similar to something you would see on a cowboy boot in an old movie about the wild west, with white lace stitching on the skin tone dress. She also has matching gloves and earring, both of which fit the cowboy theme. This outfit is perfect for Beyonce and fits the vibe of her album without doing too much.

Kendrick Lamar, the biggest winner of the night, taking home 5 awards, came out in an all denim outfit. His Canadian tuxedo was an odd choice, and possibly a nod to the Canadian who his Grammy award winning song “Not Like Us” is about. His outfit came with a jean jacket, baggy jean pants, a denim baseball cap, and a seemingly diamond necklace, which is a nice contrast to his golden trophy. But, is it appropriate for the red carpet? While the outfit does look good and was put together nicely, it could have been classier. That being said, it’s far from being the worst outfit of the night. If the denim was a darker shade, and he lost the hat, this Canadian tuxedo would have been much better.

Sabrina Carpenter had a few outfits, and they were definitely a mixed bag. The “Short N’ Sweet” had four outfits: a red carpet dress, two outfits during her performance, and one for the awards. Her red carpet dress was a silky gown with feathers on the end and on the hips by JW Anderson. The neckline wrapped around her neck with a string of diamonds by Chopard. While I love the color and shape of the dress, the feathers destroy it. If it were just on the ends, that would have been pretty, reminiscent of an old Hollywood robe. But, the hips make it look unnecessarily poofy and odd.

Her first performance outfit was both a tuxedo and a dress – the top being a typical blazer, while the bottom was a skirt. It was ugly. It looked too big, and it didn’t fit her extravagant and colorful personality. It was obvious that she was trying to go for the old showgirl look, but it doesn’t fit her.

Her second performance outfit, however, took the cake. She wore a baby and navy blue bodysuit encrusted with tons of diamonds. She clearly likes blue, and she looks good in it. The neckline had diamond necklaces across her chest, making her outfit look even more expensive. This one is beautiful, and it’s one of my favorite outfits of the night. But, it just doesn’t fit her. It’s not flamboyant enough. Maybe Carpenter is trying to tone things done and go for a more mature appearance, but I doubt that’s the case.

Her last outfit of the night was a dark gold dress. This one was definitely much more basic than others, in terms of the shape, but it still looked good on her. This outfit fit her the best. The strapless top allowed her to let her hair down, and her hair is always the highlight. Overall, her outfits were pretty hit or miss.

Gracie Abrams didn’t go the traditional route. Instead of dressing like she was going to an awards ceremony, she dressed like she was attending a wedding. As the bride. Her Chanel dress was an off white shade and included a veil that went to the floor. The neckline was low, and the center of it featured a flower. Right below it was a black belt. This dress was… something. While I can understand the intent of the dress, it just doesn’t work for me. The veil is awkwardly attached to the dress, the proportions are off, and the shade makes her look like a sickly Victorian child. If she lost the veil and changed the shade, or added more color, it would have been more appealing.

Benson Boone started off the night by wearing an oversized suit by Dolce & Gabbana. Suits are the go to outfit for men on the red carpet, so it’s nothing new to see. But, his suit at least tried to be different. It was light black, and oversized, which made it stand out among the sea of men in black tuxedos. It wasn’t great, but at least it was something.

During the ceremony, he changed into a typical tux briefly. But, when Heidi Klum and Nikki Glaser stood up, people knew something was up. Then, out of nowhere, they rip his suit off, revealing a sheer blue jumpsuit by Monty Jackson. It had sequin all over it, and it had a blue belt, separating the open top and flared pants together. This bodysuit was no joke. It held up as Boone sang, danced, and even flipped on stage. This was one of my favorites of the night. It was bright and beautiful, perfect for the rising star.

Tonight may have been about the music, but the fashion is always at the forefront. People express themselves through what they wear, celebrities especially. Fans will observe every little detail of their outfits. Trust me, I know. Not in the sense that people watch what I wear, but that I’m the obsessed fan.
