Knight of the Week: Finn Whalen

Knight of the Week: Finn Whalen

Q: What are your after high school plans?

A: I am playing semi-pro soccer in Salamanca, Spain! I will also be doing online college while I play and getting my coachings license on the side, so I will be very busy.

Q: What went into making this decision?

A: To me it is the perfect situation, I get to play my sport seven days a week while studying in university. I always wanted to visit many spots in Europe, but now I get to live there!

Q: What are you looking forward to the most?

A: I am excited to have solid weather all year, unlike Chicago. Like I said before, of course being able to play the sport I fell in love with. Also a solo apartment is super dope!

Q: What will you miss most after this big move?

A: 100% the hardest part will be leaving my amazing family, friends, and girlfriend. They are very important to me and made my decision ten times harder than it would’ve been without having to leave them.

Q: When did you realize you wanted to continue to compete/play after high school?

A: I think I’ve always had that in my head, maybe 7 or 8. When I realized I could take this somewhere was around sophomore year though, I think that’s when I think I improved the most.

Q: Who has been your biggest role model? Why?

A: It’s hard to pick one person, so I’m going to pick two. My mom and my dad! They got me to where I am today both physically in soccer and mentally in life. I love my parents.

Q: Who has helped you get to this point?

A: Tons of people, especially my teammates. They keep me loving the sport, and help me improve. Of course all of my coaches too.

Q: When did you start playing this sport?

A: I was around 6 or 7 when I first started playing soccer, became a goalkeeper around 10.

Q: How has Prospect helped you get to this point in your athletic career?

A:Prospect has done a lot, thank you to all the coaches I have played for at Prospect. High school soccer gave me some of the most fun and memorable memories of my life.

Q: What made this program stand out to you?

A: My future agent sent me an email one day expressing interest in me, and we had weeks of talking, scouting, and discussion. Select Generation gave me a once in a lifetime opportunity for an American player to go play out in Europe.

Q: What did you do to prepare to play sports in college?

A:I still have a few months until I leave, so I have been completing my off-season workouts as well as playing with my current club. But I definitely need to work on my Spanish! I never should have stopped after Spanish 2, I’m super rusty.
