In a shock to the school and surrounding community, sophomore Steven Taylor committed suicide last Thursday, Jan. 6. Teachers and administrators were informed that evening, and students were told by Principal Kurt Laakso in a special announcement during first period on Friday.
“It saddens me greatly to lose a beloved member of our school community,” Laakso said in a later email. “The students and staff at Prospect High School constitute a kind of extended family, and it hurts us all when someone so young and full of promise dies so suddenly.”
Laakso also added that the school has a staff of psychologists, social workers and counselors to help students deal with their grief.
Students interested in attending Taylor’s wake can go to Glueckert Funeral Home on Wednesday, Jan. 12, from 3 to 9 p.m. It is located at 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road. There will also be a memorial service at Kingswood United Methodist Church the next day, beginning at 11 a.m. The church is located at 401 West Dundee Road, in Buffalo Grove.
