On Thursday, May 22, eight girls will be competing at the state track and field competition held in Charleston.

Head coach Dave Wurster believes that the girls will place well, as long as they have their best performance of the year.

Freshman Brooke Wilson is proud that she has the opportunity to compete at state. Because she ran in a four-person relay, she watched as her teammates ran “neck and neck” with the other teams.

“When we got a lead in the final 100 meters, we were pretty confident [the other team] wouldn’t come back,” Wilson said.

Winning a medal at the competition is a hope for both the athletes and Wurster, but in no way is it an expectation.

“When you’re pretty good, you always set goals that are a little out there,” Wurster said. “When you try to get to those really high levels, it becomes more of a big deal. More people are crying after missing the world championship than when they get eliminated during the first round of playoffs.”
