On Oct. 8, the girls’ golf team placed third at regionals, scoring 352, and thus qualified for the sectional competition. They were defeated by New Trier and Loyola Academy by 14 and 17 points respectively.
According to head coach James Hamann, they went into the regional knowing they would be up against some of the state’s best teams — out of the 11 schools at the regional, four qualified for state last year.
“We go play where we are told, and we ended up accomplishing a difficult task,” Hamann said.
According to Hamann, the regional was not the team’s greatest performance this year, but they nevertheless were able to get to the next stage.
During the regional, Hamann says it was getting very close and that there definitely was some worry about not qualifying. Now, the team is preparing for the sectional Oct. 13, something that Hamann says they have been preparing for the whole year.
The team is excited to compete at the sectionals, but according to Hamann, they try to keep their emotions “in check.”
“We try to keep our emotions on the task at hand, which is the shot that they’re hitting,” Hamann said. “We’re at the point that we’re playing against a lot of good teams, and every shot is just as important as another one. I hope the girls are getting better at staying in the present moment and keeping their emotions in check, whether they are positive or negative.”
