Volleyball loses close match to Hersey

It was a volleyball match where every possession had fans on the edge of their seats. Thursday night in Ken Carter gymnasium was a classic Prospect-Hersey head to head battle.
After the Knights took home the first game in a thrilling 30-28 victory, Hersey was able to bounce back winning the final two games 27-25 and 25-20.
“We played the best volleyball of the year,” head coach Mike Riedy said. “[Our team] almost did a perfect job of executing the game plan. They listened to coaching, they adapted to their primary hitters and I think in general we controlled the net tonight. Hersey beat us with their scrappiness on defense and they didn’t let anything drop….there were unforced errors [by us] that shouldn’t have happened.”
Senior captain Eryk Krzyzak (8/8 on passing) believes they need to do a better job with closing the game out.
“What we didn’t do was capitalize when we had a lead,” Krzyzak said. “We didn’t push it, we let them score right away. We have to get on runs and make them stop us.”
Despite the loss, Riedy believes the team learned something about themselves tonight.
“Some of these guys don’t have a lot of varsity experience,” Riedy said. “But tonight what they demonstrated is that they can handle the pressure.”
The Knights head into the Warren tournament where they will kick off their first match against number two ranked New Trier. According to Riedy there will be no pressure there.
“We’re gonna go and have some fun,” Riedy said. “We’re going to play five matches and see what we can do with that.”
As for Krzyzak, he sees the Warren tournament as a way to compare themselves with the other teams.
“It really gives us a chance to measure where we are at,” Krzyzak. “We really have a chance to step up and we have to treat every ball like it’s our last. If we do that, we will have a really good chance.”
