Junior pole vaulter Cassidy Selep has achieved the state qualifying height of 10’6” multiple times this year.
When Selep was on her plummet down from passing over the bar Thursday night at the girls’ varsity track team’s sectional, she knew she won the sectional title and was heading to state.
“I was already celebrating when I was falling [through] the air,” Selep said.
The Knights also took home first place as a team at Glenbard West High School Thursday, May 14.
“When they announced us coming in first, we all came together [to celebrate],” junior long jumper Brenda Kendziera, who also qualified for state in long jump with a distance of 17’10”, said. “[Winning as a team] just felt ten times better [than qualifying individually].”
Alongside Kendziera and Selep (high jump, 100m high hurdles, pole vault) juniors Angela Roman (Shotput), Maya Mason (100m high hurdles, 4×100 relay), Jes Skudlarek (High jump, 4×100) each qualified for state.
Sophomores Autumn Stone (4x100m), Annie Walsh (4×100 relay), and Brooke Wilson (1600m, 3200m) also qualified for state.
The state meet will be held from May 21-23 at Eastern Illinois University, and Selep has some high expectations for herself in pole vault.
“My goal to get 11’6″ at state,” Selep said. “That would [also] tie the [school] record.”
