The Prospect football team wasn’t the only one suffering over the weekend.
The girls’ cross-country team failed to complete their goal of winning state this year, finishing sixth in Peoria on Saturday.
Freshman Lauren Poplawski said that the team’s main target was hitting the bulls eye of first place, since the team was ranked No. 1 at the beginning of the season.
The team scored 204 overall, earning them their sixth place title. Palatime won the meet, placing three runners in the top 19 and scoring 99 points. Sandburg finished second with 142 points.
Wheaton Warrenville South (160 points), Naperville North (174) and Geneva (176) placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
Poplawski finished 31st out of around 211 runners and first for Prospect, crossing the finish line at the 18:10 mark. Right behind her was senior Annette White in the 33rd spot.
According to Poplawski, the team was plagued by sickness and minor injuries: freshman Brooke Wolfe and junior Savannah Snead were both recovering from the flu and White had trouble with her shin.
“We just weren’t 100 percent ready,” Poplawski said.
“It all came together [towards the end],” Wolfe said, “but then it just fell apart.”
