Though Friday’s game was the 2019 senior night, the game was dominated by
some of the team’s younger talent, contributing to Prospect’s 51-34 victory over Buffalo Grove.
It was largely due to juniors such as Noah Marx, the 165 lb wide receiver, who had
arguably his best performance of the season, scoring three touchdowns.
“I said at the start of the year, I just wanted to have a big game once, and it ended up
happening,” said Marx.
In addition to Marx, quarterback Alex “Gary” Moeller, who threw for a total 341 yards,
and running back Luke Zardzin, who had 110 total yards, both had several excellent plays, despite only being juniors themselves.
“They did a lot of stuff that we hadn’t seen on film,” said Buffalo Grove head coach Jeff
Vlk. “They did a great job of getting the ball to their other guys.”
After coming off of two losses to Hersey and Rolling Meadows, this game was a major
turning point for the Knights, as they needed a win to have the chance to host a playoff game.
“We all came into this game with the ‘We got to win this game’ mentality,” said Marx. “I
knew that, our whole line knew it, our whole offense knew it, and we just played our butts off.”
Though both teams started the first quarter strong, neither could gain the edge until the
Knights scored twice on hand-offs to Zardzin, both of which were followed by a successful
two-point conversion.
The Bison closed the gap to 16-6 on Oberman’s 8-yard run with 6:24 left in the second
quarter.
In response, Moeller would counter with a 1-yard dive into the end zone after connecting
with Zardzin for an 84-yard pass.
Buffalo Grove then retaliated with another touchdown, leaving the score at the half 23-13
with the Knights in the lead.
In the third quarter, Prospect expanded their lead, scoring three more touchdowns, all by
Noah Marx, while only conceding one touchdown to Buffalo Grove. The Bison defense proved no match for
Marx’s quick movement as he managed to slip through them to the endzone time and time
again.
Although the fourth quarter saw Buffalo Grove score two more touchdowns, Prospect
was too far in the lead for them to come back.
The Bison’s situation was not helped by Moeller’s 10-yard rushing touchdown with only
6:05 left in the game.
With the Knights’ victory, they are currently one win away from hosting their first
home playoff game in years. After preparing extensively for Friday’s game, the team is starting
to look ahead for what’s to come.
“We’re gonna keep competing with each other during the week and try to get better each
day,” said head coach Dan DeBoeuf. “… Now it’s go time.”
