October Artist of the Month: Emily Laffey

October+Artist+of+the+Month%3A+Emily+Laffey

What kind of art do you like to make?
“Mainly I like to oil paint, because I think it’s easier to get the colors to show up and it’s much easier to work with texture.”

How long have you been making art?
“I think since middle school I started drawing, and then in seventh grade I started taking an oil painting class, and I’ve been taking classes at Prospect every year.”

Where do you get inspiration for your art?
“Typically, I do landscapes, so mostly from pictures I take because I have a connection with it.”

What’s your favorite piece of art you’ve made?
“Over the summer, I went down to Southern Illinois and watched the sunrise over a lake, and took a picture of it, and painted it, it’s really cool.”

What do you plan to do with your art in the future?
“I’ve been considering a career in art, I’m not really sure what I would do with a degree but it would most likely be in painting.”

What advice do you have for less experienced artists?
“If you want to do something, try it. You can’t really make a mistake, really go out of your comfort zone because you’ll be really surprised by what you can do.”
