It is the middle of the season when teams start to lose the motivation that drove them at the start. They have not yet gained the anticipation of competing in conference meets. Like a mid-life crisis, most athletes can relate to this time when the practices become redundant.
However, the boys’ swim and dive team were able to fight the slump when they faced the Conant Cougars Friday, Jan. 7.
The Knights were particualrly successful in the 100 yd. breastroke. Prospect took first and second place finishes with senior Nathaneal Ginodo taking first place with a time of 1:07.92, and senior Brian Kugler taking second with a time of 1:09.99.
The divers were also triumphant with junior Matt Muniz taking second place with 217.5 points, seniors Andre Burke taking third with 196.45 points, and Michael Senft taking fourth with 169.70 points.
Despite the overall loss of 123 – 63 to Conant, the boys are still fighting the midseason slump by keeping team-wide goals in mind.
“We just need to keep working to be the best we can be, and to give it all [we] have at each meet,” senior Matt Forssander said.
Senior Kris Daorerk explained that winter break practices kept the swimmers in shape. The first week was more challenging because the boys had to swim increasing fast sets. Each set they had to swim farther distances and were alloted a shorter amount of time to finish them. Everyone was happy to get back to competing in the meets.
Even with conference looming in the distance, swimmers are still “focusing on the here and now,” Daorerk said.
