The boys’ golf team placed first overall in the Mid-Suburban League Tuesday, Sept. 30, at the Chevy Chase Golf Course in Wheeling with sophomore Robert Garmoe taking home the individual championship shooting a 73.
Garmoe was closely followed by senior TJ Swan with a 74 and seniors Grant Gavin and Jack Kavanagh with 77. Seniors Joey Dellanina and Johnny Bruno shot an 80 and 81 respectively giving the Knights an overall score of 301. The Knights’ beat second place Barrington by four strokes.
Being only a sophomore and shooting the best in all of conference, Garmoe is happy, but gives all the credit to his team for the way they performed today.
Up next the Knights have regionals. Garmoe believes the conference meet was a great way to start the end of season tournament schedule, but says the team “still [has] a long way to go”. According to head coach Tom Martindale, the win gives the team confidence moving forward.
The tournament was played in sloppy and cold conditions, which Garmoe believes makes them stronger as does the tough competition they faced Thursday.
According to Martindale, the team also became connected through the meet because they all had to focus on one score to get them to move forward.
The Knights have put in work all season and even in the offseason to get them to this point. Martindale is proud that the team’s work paid off. He is also very happy that the team got to see their work translate into results. Many times a team may work hard but never see it translate into anything Martindale believes.
“You gotta put in the time to get the results,” Garmoe said. “Also, our coach has been really good in helping us get ready for tournaments.”
Moving forward Garmoe believes the team just has to focus on every shot, and every hole to be successful.
“We’re looking forward to the opportunity to advance,” Martindale said.
