Going into a new season after the top three players graduated is difficult, but going into a new season with the top three players graduated, and without a home course is in a whole new category of difficult. The odds were certainly not in the girl’s golf team’s favor at the beginning of the season.
“Coming into the season, I don’t think anyone thought we could make down to state let alone come in fifth,” senior Isabella Flack said. Flack was one of two returning members from last year’s state winning golf team, the other being Kacie O’Donnell.
The team did not only lose a lot of talent from the graduated seniors (six in total), but they also lost a lot of experience.
“We had a big lack of tournament experience coming into the season,” head coach Jim Hamann said. “We had only two girls that played in any tournaments [last year] whatsoever.”
These challenges could have derailed any chance for the team to make it down state, but they did not let that happen. According to Hamann the team starting believing in themselves, and were able to do what many people thought was not possible at the beginning of the year.
The team was able to win their seventh conference championship in a row, which both Hamann and Flack say no one thought was possible coming into the season, and were also able to get fifth in the state competition with a score of 331 (O’Donnell- 79, Accardi- 84, Ponzi- 84, Flack- 84, Minasian- 90, Dazzo- 94).
With the season completed, Hamann is already optimistic for next year. Even though the team will be losing seven seniors, they will still be a force to reckon with.
“We are only going to have two seniors next year, so we’ll be a very young team,” Hamman said. “If the girls get into [the game], the sky’s the limit for what we can do.”
