Boys' golf team looks to overcomes loss of home course

By Lauren Miller
Online Associate Editor-in-Chief
After a state run last year, the boys’ golf team is looking to have another successful 2014 season by putting in the work all summer and even last spring to make it one.
But a multitude of roadblocks stand in the way of their road to success with one of those being a younger team. This year the varsity roster consists of five seniors, five juniors and two sophomores, a diverse mix of ages the golf program does not often see.
With many new players on the team, it has been tough for the boys to bond as quickly as they have in years past, especially since their home course is under renovation.
“I feel like we are getting along well especially without Mt.Prospect, because we would usually see each other during the summer which helps, but this year we really haven’t seen each other much since we are all spread out at different courses,” senior Grant Gavin said.
Head coach Tom Martindale even sees the construction on Mt. Prospect as an opportunity for the boys to grow closer together.
“We’re going to be on the road a lot, I think a lot of that (driving) is going to bond us. Bus rides are going to bond us tighter, given that we don’t play a home match,” Martindale said.
Even though a multitude of new challenges are facing the Knights, that does not hinder their goals for the upcoming season. While Gavin dreams big, Martindale hopes to be successful week by week.
“Some of our team goals would be to win conference, and it would be awesome if we made a run at state again because it was an amazing experience last year,” Gavin said.
“Our goal is to get better as each week goes by in the season,” Martindale said. “I think if that happens some really good things can happen in the end of the season.”
