The Knights were short two men heading into the boys’ track Loyola sectional Thursday, May 22. Sophomore sprinter Dan Marshall and junior distance runner Mike Anderson were both previously injured and were out for the remainder of the season with leg injuries.
The Knights placed seventh out of 15 teams with 37 points at the Loyola sectional as Evanston took home the crown with 106.5 points. Meanwhile, the Knights managed to qualify five different boys for state.
“We knew competition was high and room for error was low,” senior Luis Leguer said. “[We] got smoked a bit, but [the other teams] were state competitors.”
The 4×800 meter relay was made up of junior Greg Suarez along with seniors Ben Pederson, Will Lussenhop and Max Gonzalez. The team qualified with a time of 7:58.97 while also coming in second in the sectional.
Senior thrower Justin Phillips also qualified for the state meet in both shotput and discus. The state meet is at Eastern Illinois University from May 29 to May 31.
“It’s good to know we’re going down state,” Suarez said. “That was the goal the whole year.”
