The varsity boys’ track and field team had a surprise contributor during their indoor conference meet on Saturday.
After the Knights senior class last year scored 75 of the 90 points during the meet last season, it was the underclassmen who needed to step up for head coach Jay Renaud and his squad.
The underclassmen did step up for the Knights, scoring a 50 of the teams 75 points in a third place finish out of twelve teams.
Renaud thinks that the increased workload for the underclassmen was crucial for the team and its success down the road and into the teams outdoor season.
“Yeah it’s definitely huge,” Renaud said. “These younger guys really haven’t been phased by anything, and this has been really good experience competing against some of the best teams in the state.”
According to Renaud, key contributions came from junior Michael Shafis, and sophomores John Moellenkamp and Justin Carreon.
However, this seasons senior class also found a way to contribute, scoring 15 points, with senior Nate Cozine leading the way.
Renaud believes while this meet was a very important one to help to discover who this team is, but also in preparation for the outdoor season not too far away.
“The biggest thing for us moving forward is to make sure we are filling those events [discuss, hurdles] and making sure we are taking on top of the other events as well,” Renaud said. “We’d like to be third or better at the outdoor conference meet, which we think we are very capable of doing.”
