Girls' swimming and diving takes fourth at Hersey Jamboree

By Jack McDermott

The girls’ swimming and diving teams traveled to Olympic pool last Saturday in Arlington Heights to compete in the annual Hersey Jamboree against powerful opponents like Mundelein and Jacobs, two talented teams that are out of conference.
After placing third last year, Prospect was expected to take third again.  However, the team was missing senior star diver Dana Liva and sophomore varsity swimmer Gracie Dix, causing them to finish in fourth, just behind Hersey.
“Everyone swam pretty well considering the pool was not very good and we were missing some of our best athletes,” senior Ellie McGough said.
At Olympic, the pool is very shallow and during starts, swimmers were hitting the bottom, causing slower than normal times.
Still, junior Betsy Rozow really enjoyed the meet because music is played throughout the entire day and at the beginning there is a dance competition (see below for Prospect’s dance).
“[The dance] didn’t go quite as well as we had hoped it would, but for the amount of rehearsal we did and the fact that we made it up that morning I think we did a pretty good job,” Rozow said.
Looking ahead, the team believes that they need to work on bonding more.
“Sometimes it’s obvious that people are only working as individuals but obviously we are better as a team,” McGough said.
The team will have to fix that issue quickly, however, because a dual meet against Hersey to decide the MSL East is coming up this Thursday.

At the Hersey Swim Jamboree, teams were asked to participate in a choreographed dance piece before the competition as part of Hersey’s homecoming week. Prospect decided to use a mixtape of High School Musical Songs for their dance.
