The blood drive, through Life Source, will be at Prospect from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the field house foyer. Life Source is an organization that was started with the mission to provide blood to people in need all over the Chicagoland area. They also offer scholarships to local high schools, including Prospect.
Service club members have been in the commons all week with a sign-up sheet and parent permission slips. Sophomore Adriana Brisco was one of the students encouraging kids to sign up for the blood drive.
“I think it’s important to give back to the community, and it’s cool how you can save lives,” Brisco said.
Students need to be 16 with a parent permission slip in order to donate. If someone cannot attend but wishes to donate blood, they can go to another Life Source blood drive and give them the mp30 code, and that helps benefit Prospect’s blood drive.
A goal for service club is to have at least 60 people at the blood drive donating blood. However, they need a lot of registrants because sometimes people are not eligible to donate blood because of different reasons, such as medications, or traveling abroad. If 60 people donate blood, roughly 180 people will benefit from it.
“It always is really inspiring for me to see our students stepping up and be willing to donate,” Hammerstrom said.
Service club does different events and fundraisers throughout the school year to help out the surrounding community. However, according to service club sponsor Erik Hammerstrom, the blood drive is one of the most profound things they do because it can help people in life or death situations.
“This is the one that really hits me the most because I know how important it is,” Hammerstrom said.
