Caitlin Claytor named D214 concerto/aria competition finalist

By Danielle Church

Music has always been a part of senior Caitlin Claytor’s life. When she was very young, Claytor joined her school/church choir, orchestra and band. Then Claytor got to Prospect and became a part of every music ensemble she could.

Now she has been named one of six people out of the entire district who will perform at the District 214 Honors Orchestra Concerto/Aria Finals Recital on Monday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m in Forest View’s theater. Claytor is the only person from Prospect and the only vocalist who will compete.
To become a finalist, Claytor had to sing an aria, record it and then send it into english teacher Jeremy Morton. On one of the days off from school, she and her accompanist/voice teacher Colleen Timler got together to record Claytor singing the aria “Dove Sono I Bei Momenti” from one of Mozart’s most famous operas called “Le Nozze De Figaro.” Claytor will sing the same aria at the competition in November.

After all the hard work, Claytor was ecstatic to hear she had landed a spot in the competition.

“I feel like I have gotten a lot of opportunities this year and I’m incredibly glad that everything has gone pretty much my way in terms of what I’ve really wanted,” Claytor said.

Claytor believes she has really been able to make it this far because of her role models.

“I wasn’t very good when I was younger and I didn’t like that I wasn’t very good,” Claytor said. “So, I listened to people that I thought were good and then did my best to be like them.”
For Claytor, one of the most influential role models has been her mom. Claytor has listened to her mom play an instrument and sing throughout her entire life.
“I’ve pretty much lived my entire life under a music umbrella,” Claytor said.
Although Claytor is not necessarily expecting to win the District 214 Honors Orchestra Concerto/Aria Finals Recital because “there are clearly some fantastic musicians who will also be performing,” she has a very specific goal for the competition.
“I plan on going into the recital and just performing the best I can because my family will be in the audience to hear me perform my best,” Claytor said.

Other finalists:

1.  Laleh Omaraie, BGHS Piano

2.  Peter Kotecki, BGHS Clarinet

3.  Kyle Chung, JHHS Violin

4.  Serena Voltz, JHHS Tuba

5.  Roya Zandi, JHHS Violin
