The varsity girls’ tennis team captured something that they have not had since the 2004 season, an MSL East title.
First, the Knights took down perennial MSL East powerhouse Buffalo Grove in their 6-1 match victory against Buffalo Grove on Sept. 21.
Buffalo Grove won 12 out of the last 14 MSL East titles, with Hersey winning the other two.
It was a third doubles match, led by seniors Amanda Stickels and Alice Getmanchuk that clinched the Knights spot on top of the conference.
However, it was a match against a cross-town rival, Rolling Meadows, that put Prospect at the top of the division.
Against the Mustangs, the Knights swept the doubles events and won the total score as well, 5-2.
Head coach Mike McColaugh appreciates this senior class and the rest of the team’s dedication to the program throughout the season and even beyond that.
“I’m just happy for the girls,” McColaugh said. “It was so fun to see how excited they were, because they knew that they accomplished something, they accepted it, and they were confident.”
The team will continue to journey towards the playoffs this week beginning on Monday when the Knights host the Lake Park Lancers.
While McColaugh is extremely satisfied with this seasons team winning the MSL East title, he wants to make this an annual event.
“To have one of our best teams be one of our youngest teams is really exciting,” McColaugh said. “There are even more younger kids in the pipeline, hopefully what this does is make winning an expectation and raises our goals.”
