Foods 1 holding cake decorating contest

The cake baking competition is a biannual event driven by Foods teacher Amy Collins where students, staff and anyone else can vote on cakes baked by Foods 1 students.

Strawberries“You’re voting on categories of: best use of skill, most creative and overall favorite — just something you really like,” said Collins, who has done this now for seven years.

Though the contest is held in fun, it can get competitive.

“It’s everybody against each other,” Foods teacher Sharon Hammerich said.

The students started baking on Monday and spent up until Thursday icing and decorating the cake and the sheet that it sits on.

“It has to be just one box of cake mix, and then they have to make all the icing,” Hammerich said. “Anywhere their imagination will let them go with it — they can take it beyond that.”  The U

Students are allowed to bring in extra materials to decorate the cake; for example, Hammerich had a student make a Little Mermaid cake and bring in licorice ropes for the hair.
