It was the great Don Adams who played Maxwell Smart in the 1965 television series “Get Smart.”  His most memorable line, “missed it by that much,” applies to the boys’ golf team, who came extremely close to moving on to state this past weekend.  The Knights finished third in the IHSA sectionals on Monday at the Sportsman’s Country Club in Northbrook.
The team had a score of 301, barely finishing behind the state-qualifying New Trier and St. Viator (tied with 298) by three strokes.
“We did as well as we probably could do on a regular day,” junior Zac O’Hara said.  “It obviously hurts losing the way we did.”
Still, the result was a big improvement from last year, when the team finished eighth at sectionals.
The top performers for the Knights included senior Matt Maloney, scoring 74.  Nipping at his heels were juniors Derek Leeney and Jimi Poulos with 75s.  All three qualified to move on to state meet.
O’Hara said that the team had high hopes for the playoffs, since they had finished the regular season with a perfect 11-0 record.

“Unfortunately, our best just wasn’t good enough,” O’Hara said.
