Senior Stephanie Towey will be donning a hat and some old clothes again this year to spend nine hours over two weekends participating in the Community Paint-a-thon with the Service Club. The event’s goal is to paint the exterior of a local resident’s house on September 6 and 13.
15 students and six staff members will trek to Des Plaines to take part in the experience organized by Catholic Charities. Catholic Charities acquires supplies through donations from paint companies, such as Valspar, and selects at-need applicants for the event. The selected homes will be painted by various local groups including Service Club.
According to past student participants, homeowners have been grateful for the help they received. They have even helped out by providing refreshments for the hard-at-work students. The painters have found the Paint-a-thon to be a rewarding event.
First year Service Learning Coordinator Michelle Tantillo is eager to lead the Prospect contingent in this event.
“As soon as I knew I was taking over this new role, I instantly made sure that I had the weekends free for the Paint-a-thon this year,” Tantillo said.
As a bonus, Tantillo will have some help from a seasoned veteran. Former Service Learning Coordinator Dave Jacobson will be involved with this year’s Paint-a-thon.
“It will be fun to have old faces and new ones there, too,” Towey said.
