What we know of Valentine’s Day now is the celebration of love and gratitude towards family, significant others and friends, but when looking back at history, there are many theories as to how Valentine’s Day came to be.

“Modern holidays like Valentine’s Day have a lot of historical past behind them that people may not know about because the way they are expressed or celebrated evolves constantly to match the century,” history teacher Jonathon Kaminsky said. “The history behind it is usually lost in the consumerism or new way of celebration nowadays.”

Here are a couple historical facts about Valentine’s Day that have contributed to the way we celebrate Feb. 14.
