Buffalo Grove fire enflames multimedia lab
May 25, 2023
The Buffalo Grove Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at Buffalo Grove High School (BGHS) at 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16th, according to the Lake & McHenry County Scanner. A fire had started in the English wing, and multiple fire departments were called to the scene to combat the fire. According to District 214 Communications Coordinator, Stephanie Kim, the fire occurred in the multimedia lab, and was contained to only that room. According to the Lake & McHenry County Scanner, the fire was quickly extinguished, and no injuries were reported.
BGHS classes were canceled on Wednesday, May 17th, and classes did not resume the next day, Thursday, May 18th, so that the school could address smoke and odor issues in the building, according to the Daily Herald. District 214 held an emergency meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 18th, regarding repairs. Despite not having classes, the building was open Wednesday if students wanted to meet with counselors.
As of May 23, the cause of the fire is still under investigation, as is evaluation of the destruction, according to Kim. A prevention plan has not yet been put in place, as it would depend on the yet-to-be-determined cause. Kim also stressed that the fire did not impact student safety. “Fire and evacuation protocols were followed and executed effectively,” Kim said. She did say, however, that BGHS will continue to reiterate safety plans and practice mandated safety drills to continue to assure students’ safety and reassure students that the school is safe.
