The excitement was building as the runners in a myriad of uniform colors lined up at the starting line. Fans flocked to the sides of the course, waiting in anticipation for the race to begin. As the starter raised the gun, Prospect’s cross country team took its mark. As soon as the shot sounded, they were off and running, a rushed blur of blue as they sprinted past.
The Mid-Suburban League cross country Conference meet took place in Busse Woods Saturday, October 18 and included 12 different high schools. The three boys races, JV, varsity, and frosh-soph, were all on the same course, and Prospect boys ran in all three.
The varsity team placed third overall, with four runners placing in the top 25 and making all-conference. These runners were senior Mike Anderson and juniors Matt Cozine, Carson Lecomte and Alec Hyde.
“All week, we’ve been getting in the zone,” Cozine said. “And we did really well today.”
The varsity competition wasn’t the only race dominated by Prospect; the frosh-soph team took 2nd place. Leading the way were sophomore Jack O’Donnell and freshman Jack Terry.
The season has been an uphill battle for Terry with him getting sick and being out for two weeks midway through the season.
“It’s been a struggle to get back up,” said Terry, who finished second individually.
JV also had a fulfilling race. Senior Tommy Mathews, junior Javi Moledous and junior Nate Silagi broke into the top 25 to represent Prospect.
According to sophomore JV runner Kevin Sherwood, the team followed a race plan that included attempting to keep the top three runners in the top 12 overall, and the next three in the top 25 overall. While they didn’t stick to this entirely, the JV still feel proud of their team.
“It’s very rewarding because I worked hard this season and I accomplished a lot of my goals,” said Sherwood.
