Tenuta battles wind to take third in state

Senior Nick Tenuta led the boys’ golf individual qualifiers with a third place finish at the IHSA State Championship in Bloomington, IL this past weekend. He was followed by senior Robert Garmoe in 23rd and sophomore Charlie Busch in 103rd.
According to head coach Tom Martindale, Garmoe and Tenuta now hold the eight-best and the best finishes in Prospect history, which made this weekend a particularly momentous achievement for the program.
“When you perform in a big state and you’re able to get your school represented among the best, it shows well for our school and our community,” Martindale said.
For Tenuta, the weekend was highlighted by shooting 70 on the first day. He attributes this score to hitting 13 fairways with his driver, despite the strong winds, and to his putting.
“I was making everything in sight,” Tenuta said. “When that happens, it’s a really good day.”
Although he admits he tightened up during the second day when he shot a 78, Tenuta managed to sink a 15-foot putt on the 18th green to guarantee a third place finish.
The final result put an exclamation mark on Tenuta’s high school golf career, and it was one he was not expecting.
“I wasn’t really shooting for all-state,” Tenuta said. “That wasn’t really a goal of mine because there [were] a ton of good players in this tournament, so I was very fortunate to have a good first day and just hang in there in the second.”
