The Knights found a way to win at home on Friday night, defeating Elk Grove 48-0. The Knight’s defense produced highlight after highlight forcing four turnovers and two blocked punts.
The defense shut down everything in their last two wins only giving up 7 points combined to Elk Grove and Wheeling. Senior Anthony Burkhardt had an interception in the win.
Against Elk Grove, the Knights gave up 15 passing yards. The only player producing for the Grenadiers was running back Genio Hyppolite, who rushed for 85 yards on 22 attempts.
Along with the strong defensive production, the Knight’s offense put on a show headlined by juniors Jimmy Martin and Michael Shafis. Shafis had 15 rushing attempts for 169 yards and two touchdowns, and Martin finished with 13 rushes for 45 yards and two more touchdowns.
Sebestyen thinks the team still has some improving to do in the final weeks of the season.
“We’re still young, we’re still growing,” head coach Mike Sebestyen said.
This Prospect team is still very young with seven sophomores and five juniors leading the way for the Knights.
The Prospect and Elk Grove rivalry dates back to 1990 and is the trophy is named after former Prospect coach Joe Gliwa and former Elk Grove coach Don Schnake. The winner of this game claims the trophy until they meet again the following season.
Prospect won last year 31-14 and will keep the trophy for a second consecutive year.
The team’s focus in practice, according to Sebestyen, was to learn to defend what is theirs and try to beat Hersey in the team’s final game next week.
