The two athletes the girls’ gymnastics team qualified for the state meet this Friday are almost polar opposites. On one hand, there is Katie Colmone, the experienced senior who nabbed an all-around at-large bid and has been to state before.
On the other hand there is freshman Meggie Kania, the relatively inexperienced freshman who, after she “didn’t have a great season,” suprised with a 9.35 on the floor exercise, punching her ticket to state by tying for second place at sectionals.
Although she is understandably nervous, Kania doesn’t seem to let it bother her. Since she’s “not really sure” what to expect from state, Kania takes an approach more unconventional than you would expect the average freshman to take.
“I’m actually really excited to go and perform at my best and see how I do,” Kania said.
Despite all of Kania and Colmone’s successes, the team’s score of 139.85 fell just around five points short of sectional champion Fremd, ending their season.
“We weren’t necessarily dissappointed,” Kania said. “We put in all the effort that we could and determination and motivation, so we were happy with our score.”
