In the morning when I wake up, I try to look for a Pandora station that will reflect a good mood on my day. Happy songs with a good peaceful tone is a wonderful way to start a day.
A few years ago when I was on a car ride to my lake house in Michigan, my cousin and I switched iPods and I came across Owl City. It was a different electronic tone with a boy-bandy singer but was not at all mainstream.
Many of their songs that I was listening to was happy and up beat. Almost every song I listened to was basically about nothing, and I loved that. Sometimes when you’re searching for a type of music to change your mood, you will actually be looking for a song that reflects it.
Owl City’s lyrics are literally about nothing. For example they have a song called “Dental Care” that is about going to the dentist. That’s it. I mean I guess you could get all intellectual and such and think, “Oh he’s talking about being happy and how no one fades him blah blah blah”. . . No. It’s about him going to the dentist.
However, “If My Heart Was a House” is a love song describing the singer’s, Adam Young’s, love for a girl. Hence, as Young sings in the song, “If my heart was a house, you’d be home.”
Although this song brings me back to the times of some really sucky relationships, it brings out the better memories in them. You can’t help but be happy and feel comforted when you hear this song.
Adding on to that, many of his songs have uplifting instruments and sounds that intertwine with his lyrics and bring out the happiness in the song. “Rainbow Veins” is another one of his songs that just make you feel good.
Overall, if you’re looking for a cute little band that will lift your mood, Owl City is it. So while I’m sitting in front of my mirror at 6:30 in the morning doing my hair while listening to Owl City on Pandora, I hope you are too.
