Locals enjoy Halloween festivities at Prospect Heights

Locals+enjoy+Halloween+festivities+at+Prospect+Heights

By Manisha Panthee, Features Editor
Saturday October 20th, dozens of families came out to Prospect Heights Spookfest decked out in costumes to celebrate Halloween. While some families came to enjoy an evening of games and treats such as pumpkin decorating, others were prepared to go all out for the costume contest. Whether it was a Superman themed family or the Addams Family, it was clear to see people were ready to win.
Sophomore volunteer Caroline Ayala recalled very clearly a couple dressed as cowboys with a child crawling on the floor, dressed as a cow. Although there were many in costume, she somehow couldn’t forget this family.
This was Ayala’s first time volunteering at the annual event and while volunteering, she reminisced on times where she would come to events like these with her family. When she was little, she used to want to be the person volunteering at events.
“I think it’s really fun,” Ayala said. “A lot of people get really into it and the costumes the kids wear are so cute. I really liked coming here because seeing everyone be so involved in what they’re doing and being part of the community shows a lot about where we live.”
Suburban resident Tiffany Hinton has been coming to the Spookfest for three years with her daughters and will continue to do so year after year.
“It’s been a tradition for my girls,” Hinton said. “It’s a fun event. They get to see all their little friends.”
While there weren’t an abundance of Prospect volunteers at the event this year, Prospect Service Club Sponsor Erik Hammerstrom realizes that students are busy and appreciates all the service they do for the community when they are able to.
He loves the “idea that our local park districts like Prospect Heights reaches
out to students to volunteer. I love the idea that they have a fun event for the community. Our students enjoy [volunteering] where we get to give back to the community and help make this time of year more fun for little kids.”
