“Togetherness,” said head girls’ golf coach Jim Hamann. “When they are together, they push each other, help each other, support each other when they don’t play well and support each other when they are in and out of the line up. Togetherness is one of our key factors to success.”
The 2013 Knights’ have already proven that statement to be true with multiple early wins. The team had a first place finish at the 2013 Early Bird Golf Tournament in Elk Grove on Monday along with a win against Loyola Academy on Tuesday. During the Loyola match, the varsity team also set a new school record in the low 18 hole team score by finishing with a combined total of 291 and senior Ally Scaccia set a school record in the low 18 hole individual score by finishing with a score of 69.
The team also considers effort to be another key factor in success.
“We just have to put in more effort than any other team and so far I think we are doing that,” Hamann said.
The team’s effort can be seen in the practice schedule.
Practices started on the Monday after the last day of school and continued throughout the summer. Coinciding with regular practices, the team had four day trips during the summer in which they were gone all day, practicing and playing golf.
There was also a four day trip for the varsity team down to Decatur. During the trip, they stayed as a team in a hotel and played golf all day for four days straight. Varsity players also helped out with the junior camps, along with participating in their own camp.
“We need to keep practicing as hard as we do and not get ahead of ourselves [to be successful],” junior Kacie O’Donnell said.
Senior Bridget Brassil thinks that the practice is paying off.
“We’re looking good and we’re working hard everyday so it should be a good season,” Brassil said.
It also helps the team that they gained nine freshman and only lost four seniors from last year’s team that finished second place at state.
“I’m excited to see what we can do this year. We have a ton of potential to do great things,” senior Emma Menich said.
