District Photo Show captures students’ pictures

By Ellen Siefke
Staff Writer
This year, District 214 will once again its annual photography show to showcase the best of the district’s photograph students. As usual, the show takes place during Arts Unlimited, a district-wide event that celebrates the fine arts programs with activities such as art shows and music festivals.
According to photography teacher Barbara Shaffer, each school submits 30 photos chosen by the respective teachers in each school. At the show itself, a guest photographer judges the entries and awards first-, second-, and third-place monetary items, normally in the form of gift cards.

The show travels throughout all the schools in the district, staying at each school for about one week. The show will be at Prospect from April 2 to April 6, and will be held in the library. Students are welcome to drop in and see the art any time they wish.
According to Shaffer, entries can come from all classes, including Photography 1. However, this year, due the earlier date of the show, the students in that class will not have the opportunity to participate.
“They just haven’t learned enough about photography to take some worthy photos,” Shaffer said.
Despite this missed opportunity for beginners, Shaffer still thinks the show is a good representation of all classes, and looks forward to seeing the entries every year.
“Everyone has strong programs across the district,” Shaffer said. “There’s no one school that sticks out. It’s like art; everything is unique, and everything has a different quality to it.”
Photography student senior Kyra Vandiver, whose work is displayed in the show, is also excited for the show and seeing her own work.
“It’s just a cool opportunity to look both at your work and that of your peers,” Vandiver said . “It’s also cool to see all the different work from the other schools and compare it to your own.”
