Midwest Chinese speech contest results

Katrina Espanola and Mikhall Almisry accept awards for their speech in Mandarin.

4th Annual Midwest Chinese Speech Contest was held at Northside College Preparatory High School in Chicago on April 21. The contest was hosted by the Midwest Chinese Teachers Alliance (MCTA) and sponsored by the Educational Section of the People’s Republic of China, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago and the Confucius Institute of Chicago.

Contest participants’ speeches were to be delivered in Mandarin Chinese without the benefit of notecards, printed materials or other audio-visual aids. Contestants were rated on their pronunciation and tones, delivery, fluency, and content.
The purpose of the Mandarin Speech Contest aligns with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages’ sustained effort to raise public awareness about the cognitive, academic, cultural and economic benefits that language learning provides and to help all US students “Discover Language… Discover the World.”
